Work has begun to create an eighth bridge across the River Tyne using 20 tonnes of bamboo.
The temporary suspension bridge, spanning over 100-metres, will take shape over the coming weeks as part of NewcastleGateshead’s world-class festivals and events programme in the North East and its completion will mark the start of the SummerTyne festival.
Bambuco, an Australian company specialising in the construction of huge-scale bamboo sculptures, have been invited by culture10, based at NewcastleGateshead Initiative, to bring a skilled international team of riggers to create their most ambitious work to date. The bridge will be constructed entirely by hand and span from the Law Courts in Newcastle across to HMS Calliope in Gateshead. Spectators will be able to ask riggers questions during the build and find out more at exhibitions in the viewing box at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art and the Concourse of The Sage Gateshead. In the final week, a series of music installations on the bridge itself will mark the progress of construction. All are invited to celebrations on Friday 18 July at 10pm to mark the bridge’s completion. This will include hundreds of flaming firepots, the performance of specially-commissioned music played with bamboo instruments, and a symbolic meeting between riggers in the middle of the bridge. The completed bridge will be on display for the opening weekend of SummerTyne - though crossing it will be strictly reserved for the skilled team from Bambuco, many of whom found their head for heights as talented rock-climbers! The bridge will then be dismantled immediately afterwards. The eighth bridge for Newcastle and Gateshead is the first bridge to have been constructed by Bambuco. The company’s late founder, Simon Barley, was keen to create a bridge with his company. On a visit to NewcastleGateshead, he was impressed by its seven bridges, each a major feat of engineering, and the way the bridges join together the communities of Gateshead and Newcastle, and the wider region. Following his untimely death in 2007, the company was invited by Stella Hall, creative director of culture10 based at NewcastleGateshead Initiative to realise his plans. The building of the bamboo bridge coincides with the eightieth anniversary of the Tyne Bridge. The aim of Bambuco is for the bridge to become part of the iconic riverscape for a brief moment in time, but for its image to remain in the memory of all who see it. The bamboo used to create the bridge is from a sustainable source in China, with some material being reused from previous Bambuco projects. The team will, in turn, reuse suitable bamboo after this bridge is dismantled. Anna Cordingley, Director of Art for Bambuco, said: “The invitation to look again at a familiar space has been the crux of Bambuco’s work in every city, and as Newcastle and Gateshead are characterized by the bridges they share, the challenge for us is clear. The steady progress and efforts of the builders/riggers create the interest and meaning in the work – something to which Simon would refer as kinesthetic imagery. It is their engagement with the space and with the residents of the spaces we inhabit that invites a new way of looking at the familiar.” Stella Hall, Creative Director of NewcastleGateshead Initiative, said: “People should prepare to be awestruck by the sight of an eighth bridge slowly taking shape on NewcastleGateshead’s iconic quayside. Simon Barley’s huge vision will be commemorated in a work of real imagination and communal endeavour. This temporary bridge will put the international spotlight on our breathtaking riverscape and its completion will mark the start of SummerTyne festival. It is one example of how this summer we will be showing the world why we are a vibrant and cultural place to live and visit.” Bambuco’s eighth bridge is not the only ambitious structure that will make local people and visitors alike look again at NewcastleGateshead landmarks. Work is also due to start in July on Hotel Monument, an ambitious art project to transform the top of Earl Grey’s Monument into an exclusive fully-functioning hotel room. Culture10 is an annual curated programme of exceptional cultural events and festivals across NewcastleGateshead and North East England. Established in 2004, it is managed by the Culture10 team based at NewcastleGateshead Initiative and is funded by Newcastle City Council, Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council, One North East, Northern Rock Foundation and Arts Council England, North East. For further details see www.NewcastleGateshead.com Bambuco Bambuco is famous for constructing enormous structures from bamboo and rope, and its spiritual home is the small town of Natimuk (pop. 500) in south-west Australia, although its members are drawn from around the world. Natimuk is a place known internationally for exceptional rock climbing and many of the crew members are experienced rock climbers. There is nothing unusual about using bamboo to build – people have been building structures from bamboo for thousands of years. What makes Bambuco’s work unusual is the sheer scale of the installations and the spectacular upward progress of the builders. Each work is site-specific; combining theatre, sculpture and architecture. Bambuco’s work in NewcastleGateshead will be the first time they have built a bridge and their most ambitious project to date. www.bambuco.com.au About SummerTyne SummerTyne is a ten-day summer festival on NewcastleGateshead Quayside from 18th – 27th July.
